The abuser refuses to accept responsibility for their wrongdoing and criticizes or attacks the victim while at the same time declaring they are the victim and the actual victim is the abuser.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"\"><span style=\"line-height: 2em !important;\"><strong>Emotional Neglect: <\/strong>The offender shows little to no empathy for the victim&#8217;s feelings. They <em>stonewall conversations<\/em> y <em>block<\/em> the victim&#8217;s attempts to be understood or to communicate authentically. They sabotage holidays and birthdays, using those events to create chaos while ignoring the opportunity to allow others to enjoy themselves. It can also make it difficult to trust others and to have healthy relationships.<\/p><h3 class=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-1946b7e0852\" style=\"color: rgb(155, 124, 59) !important; --tcb-applied-color: rgb(155, 124, 59) !important;\">Emotional Abuse in Marriage and Intimate Relationships<\/h3><p>Emotional abuse within a marriage or other intimate relationship is a distressing and harmful pattern of behaviors where one partner seeks to power over, exert control, manipulate, and dominate the other emotionally or physically.<\/p><p>The offender may never outwardly admit to these beliefs or motives, meaning <strong>they can be subtle and insidious but nonetheless harmful.<\/strong><\/p><p>Offenders can be very creative in their ways to power over their partner, which can make it more difficult for the victim to identify what's happening or to break the cycle.<\/p><p>Emotional abuse can lead to the erosion of the victim's self-esteem, independence, and overall well-being, often leaving them feeling trapped in circular conversations with no solutions and feelings of profound loneliness even though they are in a relationship.<\/p><p><strong>So how do you deal with emotional abuse?<\/strong><\/p><p>Let\u2019s explore some ways.<\/p><h2 class=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-1946b7f0704\">How to Deal With Emotional Abuse<\/h2><p>Dealing with emotional abuse is no easy matter.<\/p><p>Here\u2019s a basic plan or framework to show what that process looks like:<\/p><h3 class=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-1946b93cbf8\" style=\"\">Identify the Behavior<\/h3><p>Pay attention to patterns of covert behaviors in the relationship, such as:<\/p><ul class=\"\"><li>Belittling<\/li><li>Manipulation<\/li><li>Control<\/li><li>Gaslighting<\/li><\/ul><p>Recognize that <strong>emotional abuse is not acceptable and <\/strong><a href=\"\/abuse-is-never-the-victims-fault\/\" class=\"\" style=\"outline: none;\"><strong>is not your fault<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p><p>The more you familiarize yourself with <a href=\"\/resources\/\" class=\"\" style=\"outline: none;\">our terms and definitions<\/a>, which define numerous covert behaviors, the more capable you will be of disengaging from conversations that wrongly blame or attempt to control you.<\/p><h3 class=\"\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-1946b93fdc9\">Establish Boundaries<\/h3><p><strong>Acknowledge the importance of setting clear boundaries with the abuser.<\/strong><\/p><p>Communicate your limits and consequences if they do not comply. Be prepared to enforce them firmly.<\/p><p>This is no easy task. Take baby steps until you feel comfortable setting boundaries on more significant issues.<\/p><p><strong>Consider an in-home separation as a baby step<\/strong>. Or consider stepping away and withholding communication for a time so you can help yourself self-regulate.<\/p><p>If the abuse persists despite efforts to change, consider removing yourself from the abusive situation for your well-being.&nbsp;<\/p><p>This can also be a valuable boundary to motivate the abuser to self-reflect on their prior behaviors. And is also an opportunity for you to see your partner's true intentions over a lengthy period of time.<\/p><p>Note:<\/p><p>If you are experiencing physical violence, we don\u2019t recommend setting boundaries. Establishing a safety and exit plan is essential but I'm jumping ahead of myself or mor on this below, here\u2019s the next step..<\/p><h3 class=\"\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-1946b942065\">Seek Support<\/h3><p>Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or a therapist who is trained in narcissistic abuse, domestic violence, and trauma.<\/p><p>They can provide vital emotional support, validation, and guidance throughout the process where friends and family may fail you.<\/p><p><strong>It's very difficult to heal in isolation.<\/strong> Healthy and supportive connections with others can help ground you.<\/p><p>If you share your story of abuse with someone and their response is less than supportive, end the conversation.<\/p><p><em>We don't advise you to try to convince someone to believe in you.<\/em><\/p><p>It's important to recognize that few adults understand how to respond to victims in a nonjudgmental and compassionate manner.<\/p><h3 class=\"\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-1946b943fa5\">Take The MEND Project\u2019s Survivor Course<\/h3><p>This four-module course is titled \"<a href=\"\/find-clarity-and-healing-course\/\" class=\"\" style=\"outline: none;\" data-css=\"tve-u-1946ba0445d\">Finding Clarity and Healing in Difficult, Confusing, or Abusive Relationships<\/a>.\"<\/p><p>Victims often report that taking the course saved them approximately one year of therapy processing their experiences.<\/p><p>You will gain a comprehensive understanding of your situation, your mindset, the mindset of the abuser, and the next steps to healing.<\/p><h3 class=\"\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-1946b945f28\">Plan for Safety<\/h3><p>If you begin to set firm and reasonable boundaries with consequences when they do not comply or decide to separate from the abuser, <a href=\"\/help-getting-out-of-abusive-relationships\/\" class=\"\" style=\"outline: none;\">create a safety plan<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>When the offender feels they are losing control, their destructive behavior may escalate.<\/strong><\/p><p>Creating a safety plan may involve:<\/p><ul class=\"\"><li>Finding a safe place to stay<\/li><li>Notifying friends and family \u2013 identifying a confidential word you can text to alert them in an emergency<\/li><li>Documenting passwords you can change<\/li><li>Duplicating and protecting important documents and financial statements<\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"\" style=\"\" data-css=\"tve-u-1946b948b05\">Detach Emotionally<\/h3><p><strong>Begin the process of distancing yourself emotionally from the abuser.<\/strong><\/p><p>Don't expect the offender to be emotionally safe or to connect with you on a deeper level.<\/p><p>See things accurately. Avoid gaslighting yourself into thinking things will be different this time.<\/p><p>Limit contact as much as possible and avoid engaging in their attempts to manipulate or control you.
