Is It Just a Joke\u2014or Something More?<\/h2>\n
\u201cIs that what you\u2019re going to wear to the wedding?\u201d Sarah asked her husband, Jack.<\/p>\n
Jack consciously looked down at his suit.<\/p>\n
He had been feeling stressed about going to the wedding as social events like this make him anxious. Sarah knew that. <\/p>\n
\u201cIs there something wrong with what I am wearing?\u201d Jack asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Sarah replied as she put her shoes on, making a face that suggested she wanted to say yes. \u201cI just think it\u2019s funny you would pick that suit for a wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you telling me it\u2019s not appropriate? Should I wear something different?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, it\u2019s fine,\u201d she responded.<\/p>\n
\u201cSarah, we\u2019ve talked about this before, and you know how it affects me when you comment on my clothing right before we go out.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cGeez, can\u2019t you tell it was just a joke? Lighten up, Dapper Dan!\u201d Sarah said, annoyed at him for speaking up, while laughing at her \u201cjoke.\u201d <\/p>\n
She slapped him on the shoulder and said, \u201cStop being so sensitive. Don\u2019t blame me when you\u2019re the one who can\u2019t take a joke! Come on\u2014it\u2019s time to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
When Joking Crosses A Line<\/h2>\n
Sarah was not speaking up about a personal preference she held. <\/p>\n
Her behavior minimized Jack\u2019s feelings and concerns, and she knew that. <\/p>\n
Sarah knowingly took advantage of Jack\u2019s vulnerabilities and then tried to cover it up by calling it a joke\u2014this is when joking becomes weaponized and toxic.<\/p>\n
Exchanges like the one in the story above are harmful in private and even more when they happen in public in front of friends and family.<\/p>\n
While Sarah\u2019s \u201cjoke\u201d might seem light-hearted to some people, it might make others feel uncomfortable and sorry for Jack as his wife humiliates him publicly.<\/p>\n
What Is Weaponized Joking?<\/h2>\n
The term weaponized joking<\/strong> refers to saying mean things at the other person\u2019s expense and using blame-shifting to deflect. It can be done under the guise of being “just a joke,” often causing emotional distress. <\/p>\n
People on the receiving end of such toxic joking may hear things like, \u201cDon\u2019t be so sensitive, it was just a joke!\u201d<\/p>\n
