You\u2019ll learn:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why you find it hard to love yourself after the abuse you experienced&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Why it\u2019s especially hard for empaths to love themselves&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Five practical ways to practice healthy self-love&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s get started.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why It\u2019s Hard to Love Yourself After Abuse<\/h2>\n<p>Abuse victims, such as children or adults in romantic relationships, have either been told lies about themselves or have been led to believe them by the abuser\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<p>For example, someone in an emotionally abusive relationship may have regularly heard deprecating lies like: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cYou aren\u2019t good enough.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNo one else would put up with your behavior.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou\u2019re not smart enough to make it on your own.\u201d <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Or maybe the abuser communicated toxic messages by continually treating the victim like a second-class citizen as if they didn\u2019t deserve to be treated well. <\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, it\u2019s during the secondary layer of abuse (<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.themendproject.com\/es\/double-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"outline: none;\">Double Abuse\u00ae<\/a>) when a survivor attempts to reach out for support that this harmful message is conveyed.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than being believed by their family, friends, church, or professional communities, the victim is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>doubted<\/li>\n<li>criticized<\/li>\n<li>even ostracized <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eventually, the victim may begin to believe that they did something to deserve the abuse.<\/p>\n<p>And the unlovable feeling becomes an unintended part of their identity. <\/p>\n<p>To any survivor feeling this way, we want to say that we are sorry for what you\u2019ve gone through.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The abuse you endured is not your fault.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The feelings of shame and self-loathing you may be experiencing are <em>normal<\/em> for people who have been mistreated.<\/p>\n<p>Abuse is always a choice, and it\u2019s never the victim\u2019s fault.<\/p>\n<p>We are all worthy of love.<\/p>\n<p><em>Including you.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"\">The Empath\u2019s Struggle<\/h3>\n<p>We all long to experience love from others, but none perhaps as much as empaths.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s common for abuse victims to be empaths, who are individuals naturally skilled at relating to the mental and emotional state of others.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of abusers are <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.themendproject.com\/es\/examples-of-narcissistic-behavior\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"outline: none;\">narcissists<\/a>, who are people that enjoy taking advantage of the type of kindness and accommodation empaths provide.<\/p>\n<p>Empaths tend to be extremely caring and always giving others the benefit of the doubt even when faced with toxic behaviors that continually repeat themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, survivors are often so focused on others that they don\u2019t even realize they are not taking care of and loving themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you are a survivor or an empath and a survivor, we want you to know that <strong>it isn\u2019t healthy to doubt your self worth or to offer love to everyone except yourself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you\u2019ve been having negative thoughts for so long that you feel as if they are a part of you and you are unable to identify your experience of them or where and why they started.<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s you, we encourage you to think about some of your habits.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have you ever thought about harming yourself?<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever intentionally starved yourself or purged your food on purpose to \u201clook better\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever said \u201cno\u201d to opportunities that you really wanted to say \u201cyes\u201d to, and you weren\u2019t sure why?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have done or are doing any of these things, it does not mean you are corrupt or broken.<\/p>\n<p>It just means that <strong>you\u2019ve been attempting to process the harm that has been done to you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, these actions and others like it can quickly become the new normal <em>when we don\u2019t have healthy self-love<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But what does healthy self-love look like? And how can you practice it?<\/p>\n<p>Keep reading and we\u2019ll show you:<\/p>\n<h2>Five Simple Ways to Practice Healthy Self-Love After Abuse<\/h2>\n<p>Self-loving people have good habits in place.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five of them:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"\">Listen to Your Emotions<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s normal to become confused, dismissive, or derogatory regarding your own feelings, as that\u2019s what abusers do to their victims.<\/p>\n<p>It will require some practice, but consider <strong>pulling out a journal<\/strong> or <strong>setting a timer and meditating<\/strong> next time you experience a wave of negative feelings.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of telling yourself something like, \u201cI\u2019m being too dramatic\u201d or \u201cI don\u2019t have a right to feel that way,\u201d try and remember that your thoughts and feelings are important. Take note of them; don\u2019t stuff them away.<\/p>\n<p>It might be uncomfortable, but sitting in those thoughts through activities like journaling and meditation can make it easier to listen to yourself.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"\">Declare Your Goodness<\/h3>\n<p>This can be very hard to do when you do not feel like you are good enough or that you don\u2019t \u201cmeasure up.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But try it!<\/p>\n<p>Put together a list of things that are great about you (borrow from a friend or family member if you are struggling with creating your own list).<\/p>\n<p>Hang it on a wall or put it in a secret place you will commit to accessing every day. Look at it. We can trust our bodies and our intuition.<\/p>\n<p>Many times, survivors will admit that they had a gut instinct that was spot on \u2013 but they failed to honor it and ignoring it led to disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Often, we are influenced by others to go against what we feel, but this is not a good habit to develop.<\/p>\n<p>Everything will not happen as you imagined every time.
