The original harm she experienced was compounded when she encountered spiritual and institutional abuse from her community. She experienced domestic violence in the form of Covert Emotional Abuse and additional harm from those she thought she could trust..<\/p>\n<p>When she sought help, her trauma was exacerbated by the way friends, counselors, and church leaders responded. They either refused to believe her or reacted with judgment, ultimatums,&nbsp;ineffective therapeutic approaches, or patriarchal demands.<\/p>\n<p>This further mistreatment pushed Annette deeper into isolation and hopelessness. Her health was deteriorating due to the stress from both the relationship abuse and these harmful responses. Her moment of clarity came when she observed similar physical and emotional symptoms in a close family friend who was also experiencing abuse and was not supported or believed by those she&nbsp;turned to for help.<\/p>\n<p>This deeply resonated with&nbsp;Annette, bringing fresh insight into her pain. While the original abuse was&nbsp;devastating, the&nbsp;additional harm from those she sought support from was even more traumatic.<\/p>\n<p>She has defined this as <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.themendproject.com\/es\/double-abuse\/\" style=\"outline: none;\">Double Abuse\u00ae<\/a>, the traumatic event that occurs when victims finally find the courage to speak up or reach out for help, but instead of being believed, they are criticized, judged, interrogated, given harmful advice, or ostracized by family, friends, therapists, faith-based organizations, or professional communities.<\/p>\n<p>The<span> <strong><span style=\"--tcb-applied-color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important; color: rgb(0, 0, 0) !important;\">MEND Project<\/span><\/strong> <\/span>was created to provide healing and support for all those affected by abuse, offering a comprehensive pathway for victims to access clarifying and empowering tools on their journey toward self-restoration.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re so glad you are here!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Mission Statement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: DINPro;\">El Proyecto MEND<\/span><\/strong> seeks to educate, equip, and restore all who are impacted by emotional abuse and trains those who interface with them personally or professionally.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Vision Statement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/es\/double-abuse\/\">To End Double Abuse<\/a><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Statement of Faith<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><span>El Proyecto MEND<\/span><\/strong> seeks to make available the teachings of Judeo-Christian principles while respecting every individual\u2019s religious, cultural, ethnic, or socio-economic background. The process fortifies the piece, making it stronger than before. <strong>The result is a unique and stunning work of art that is even more beautiful than the original.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We at The MEND Project believe that those who have experienced abuse and bear its scars are living examples of Kintsugi. Annette\u2019s personal experiences of long-term emotional abuse in marriage and her extensive journey of recovery including comprehensive field research into the topics of Original Abuse and Double Abuse\u00ae ignited her passion for founding <strong><span>El Proyecto MEND<\/span><\/strong> in 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While seeking the help of professionals and responders, she experienced Double Abuse\u00ae in the form of spiritual and institutional abuse. These harmful encounters compelled Annette in her relentless pursuit of solutions that involved interviews with hundreds of victims and survivors. She uncovered common threads that cause victims prolonged states of confusion as well as what ultimately led them towards healing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Her journey also involved interviews with hundreds of faith-based leaders and therapists which led her to discover that most are untrained and ill-equipped to identify and help victims of covert emotional abuse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In working to prevent and remediate such harm, Annette developed protocoled models that are now being taught and implemented with therapists, churches and professional organizations across the United States. She has over 20 years of experience working in the nonprofit world, including Church ministry and serving alongside the Chaplain of a University. He is also the author or co-author of 2124 books, including \u201cDangerous Good,\u201d&nbsp;Failsafe,&nbsp;Overflow\u201d and \u201cSleeping Giant: No Movement of God without Men of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenny also authored the&nbsp;Get Healthy and Get Strong discipleship ecosystem as well as&nbsp; the \u201cSleeping Giant\u201d program of videos, Bible studies, and meetings, of which Saddleback\u2019s Rick Warren, former lead pastor, gave praise, saying it \u201cgives you a local church blueprint for moving men from being an audience sitting in a seat to becoming an army marching on the field in your congregation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenny has contributed to many publications, websites, and websitespodcasts, including The Christian Post, Charisma, Christian Mingle, Rick Warren\u2019s Ministry Toolbox, New Man and Men of Integrity, and frequently speaks at conferences organized by Every Man Ministries. He earned a bachelor\u2019s degree from UCLA and has served with Campus Crusade for Christ and the Josh McDowell Ministry. He was previously the CEO of New Life Clinics West.<\/p>\n<p>Kenny&nbsp;consults for various churches and organizations and is on the faculty of Trinity Encounter in Montana &#8211; a retreat experience for marketplace leaders. Khalifa, MSW, CHES<\/strong>&nbsp;is a passionate public health and social justice leader with over 15 years of experience advancing prevention strategies, building organizational capacity, and supporting systems change to end gender-based violence. As the&nbsp;<strong>Senior Director of Prevention and Capacity Building at the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence<\/strong>, she leads statewide initiatives that center equity, collective care, and survivor leadership\u2014working at the intersections of public health, policy, and community-based advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer also serves as a part-time lecturer at California State University, Fullerton, where she teaches undergraduate courses on intimate partner violence through a trauma-informed and anti-oppression lens. Her prior experience includes roles as Program Specialist for the Crisis Response Network at the Orange County Department of Education, Prevention Education Manager at Laura\u2019s House, and Executive Director of Kasem Cares, a nonprofit focused on elder abuse prevention and family reunification.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer holds a Master of Social Work from Boston University and a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Community Health Education from Utah Valley University. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and brings a unique combination of grassroots advocacy, policy knowledge, and organizational leadership to her work.
